About

Microfund for Women's (MFW) Green Energy Loan is more than just a financing tool. It is a strategic product that generates significant benefits across income stability, household savings, and environmental sustainability.

With persistently rising electricity costs in Jordan, an increasing number of individuals and micro-entrepreneurs are proactively seeking solutions to conserve energy and reduce daily expenses.

The Green Energy Loan specifically finances key investments that deliver substantial energy efficiency and cost savings, making them highly attractive for borrowers. These investments include Solar Water Heaters, Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Systems and Energy-efficient household appliances.

In 2019, MFW started providing green loans which now account for 4% of its portfolio. MFW succeeded in disbursing over 4K loans and over 6 million JOD.

The adoption of these green technologies has yielded significant positive ecological outcomes, proving the environmental efficacy of the lending program.

MFW’s initiative has resulted in the avoidance of 354 tons of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions per year. It has also avoided the use of 1,326 MWH of primary energy per year.

Every year, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) hosts a Sustainability Awards to recognize institutions that set high standards in environmental and social performance, with independent judges basing their decisions on a variety of factors, including standards and best practices, innovation, demonstration effects, and many others.

The EBRD chose organizations who fit into one of six categories which are Sustainable Energy, Climate Resilience, Environmental and Social Best Practices, Environmental and Social Innovation, Gender and Economic Inclusion, and Financial Intermediaries. In 2023, MFW was honored as one of the six Gold Award winners in the prestigious Financial Intermediaries category, validating its leadership in combining climate action with microfinance. 
